Am I Influencing My Life, or Is Life Happening to Me?

Have you ever stopped and wondered:

Am I influencing my life, or is life simply happening to me?

It's a question that rarely appears when life is going well.

Instead, it arrives during the quiet moments. Driving home after another busy day. Lying awake at night. Wondering where the last few months or even years have gone.

At first glance, it sounds philosophical. In reality, it's a question about control, not control over everything that happens to us, but control over the choices we make.

For many people living with anxiety, stress and overwhelm, life can begin to feel as though it's making all the decisions.

When Stress and Anxiety Take the Wheel

Life has a remarkable ability to carry us along.

We wake up, check our phones, answer emails, meet deadlines, juggle family commitments, make dinner, watch television and go to bed.

Then we do it all again tomorrow.

There's nothing wrong with routine, but when we're constantly stressed, routine quietly becomes autopilot.

Days become weeks. Weeks become months.

Before we know it, we're reacting rather than choosing.

Instead of asking, "What do I want my life to look like?" we find ourselves asking,

"How do I just get through today?"

When anxiety becomes our default state, survival replaces intention.

A Story That Might Sound Familiar

Imagine Sarah.

She's in her early forties with a demanding job and a young family. Friends describe her as organised, reliable and capable.

Inside, however, she feels completely different.

Every morning she wakes with a knot in her stomach. Before her feet even touch the floor, she's mentally rehearsing everything that could go wrong.

She tells herself she's simply being prepared.

Gradually, anxiety starts making her decisions.

She doesn't apply for the promotion because she worries she isn't good enough.

She avoids social events because they feel exhausting.

She postpones difficult conversations because she fears conflict.

She spends hours worrying about problems that never actually happen.

Without realising it, Sarah has stopped making conscious choices. She's allowing anxiety to decide what feels safe.

Life isn't moving in the direction she wants.

It's simply carrying her along.

Then one day she asks herself a simple question:

"If anxiety wasn't making this decision, what would I choose?"

That question changes everything.

As her mind begins to calm, she notices something surprising.

The challenges haven't disappeared, but she's responding differently.

She starts thinking more clearly.

She sets healthier boundaries.

She has conversations she's been avoiding.

She begins making decisions based on what matters to her instead of what anxiety tells her to fear.

Life hasn't become easier.

She has simply started steering again.

Why Anxiety Makes Us Feel Stuck

When we're anxious, our brain naturally shifts into survival mode.

This response is incredibly helpful if we're facing genuine danger, but much less useful when we're trying to make thoughtful decisions about our relationships, career or future.

When stress remains high, the emotional part of the mind often takes over, making decisions based on fear, avoidance and self-protection.

Our intellectual mind, the part that helps us reason, plan and see the bigger picture has less opportunity to do its job.

That's why anxiety leaves so many people feeling trapped.

Not because they've lost the ability to make good decisions.

But because fear has become louder than reason.

Taking Back Control

Influencing your life doesn't mean controlling everything.

None of us can control unexpected illness, loss, change or other people's behaviour.

What we can influence is how we respond.

We can choose our habits.

Our boundaries.

Our priorities.

Our perspective.

Those choices become much easier when the mind is calm.

The space between what happens to us and how we respond is where our greatest influence lies.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Anxiety often creates a cycle.

Stress leads to overwhelm.

Overwhelm leads to avoidance.

Avoidance creates more stress.

Eventually it feels as though life is happening to us rather than being shaped by us.

Hypnotherapy works by helping calm the subconscious patterns that keep the mind stuck in survival mode.

As the emotional mind settles, many people find they naturally begin thinking more clearly, feeling more confident and making decisions based on what they truly want rather than what they fear.

The goal isn't to become someone different.

It's to remove the anxiety that's been preventing you from being yourself.

Becoming the Author of Your Life

None of us writes every chapter.

Some chapters are shaped by unexpected events.

Some by loss, some by joy and some by circumstances beyond our control.

But we still get to decide how the next page is written.

Influencing your life isn't about having perfect control.

It's about refusing to hand the pen to anxiety.

So perhaps the better question isn't:

"Is life happening to me?"

Maybe it's:

"If anxiety wasn't making this decision, what would I choose?"

Because an anxious mind reacts.

A calm mind chooses.

Sometimes the first step towards influencing your life isn't changing your circumstances.

It's calming your mind enough to remember that you've been holding the pen all along.
